Looking up as I walked my kids to school this morning I saw a crop duster turned into anti-mosquito spraying plane buzzing us. There are reports of dengue in my neighborhood but the Cuban government has remained tightlipped about how many cases of dengue and zika there have been this summer.The Cuban word “guajiro” refers to people from the island’s countryside. A lot of times it can be used as an insult, to say a person is simple or backwards. Some historians think the word may be derived from “war hero” as veterans of the Spanish-American war received a special stipend from the US. Whatever the explanation the guajiros I met have been the loveliest, most generous and hospitable people.
